It’s spring and rabbits have come out of their holes. And in our neighborhood there are lots and lots of them. And lots of rabbits mean a lot of holes and poop (gross!) in an otherwise green and beautiful lawn.

With this reality and my love of gardening, my plants are mostly rabbit-resistant. These are my plants the rabbits haven’t nibbled:

  • Daffodil ‘Yellow Cheerfulness’
  • Daylily ‘Happy Returns’
  • Astilbe ‘Spinell’
  • Heuchera ‘Raspberry Ice’
  • Thyme
  • Juniper ‘Blue Star’
  • Cornus sericea ‘Arctic Fire’
  • Ilex Verticillata ‘Red Sprite’
  • Peony ‘Nice Gal’ ; ‘Largo’ ; ‘Bowl of Beauty’ ; ‘Sorbet’
  • Russian Sage ‘Little Spire’
  • Nandina domestica ‘Nana Purpurea’
  • Nepeta subsellis
  • Crocus tomassinianus
  • Muscari

Plants that are supposedly rabbit-resistant, but are NOT:

  • Baptisia australis ‘Purple Smoke’
Chewed to the ground, still alive though and sending new shoots. I plan to put a wire mesh this time.
  • Nandina domestica ‘Gulf Stream’
Defoliated. I don’t know if it’s still alive. I’ll wait until late spring to see if it sends new shoots.
  • Phlox glaberrima ‘Morris Berd’
They keep nibbling the leaves on this one. But it’s so proliferous I don’t really mind. It’s also an evergreen in my 6b zone.

I just planted Styrax ‘Angyo Dwarf’. It is said to be rabbit-resistant. I don’t want to wait and see. I put a wire mesh in it to be sure. Last time I was pretty sure about the rabbit resistance of my nandinas since they haven’t nibbled on the ‘Nana Purpurea’ cultivar. Now my three Nandina ‘Gulf Stream’ are defoliated. Bad rabbits.
